Program Introduction

Early 2008 the Dutch ministers for Development Cooperation and Welfare / Sports (VWS) opened the Sport Coalitions in Action Program 2008–2011 promoting sports as a means to support development processes in ten countries. The total program budget is €16 million of which €240.000 is secured for the Bhutan program from 2009–2011. Bhutan+Partners coordinate the Sport Coalitions in Action Program Bhutan for the Dutch ministry. The Youth Development Fund in Bhutan is the executive and administrative agency in Bhutan.

The Sport Coalitions in Action Program in Bhutan supports young urban out of school youth in Thimphu. Sport is used to learn skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership and teaches core principles such as tolerance, cooperation and respect. The program creates opportunities for young people in terms of inclusion, employment, emancipation and empowerment.
